About Us

The African Centre for Study, Development Research and Civic Education (ACCE) was established in 1994 as a non-profit, non-partisan and non-governmental organization dedicated to the building and dissemination of knowledge and to the advancement of socioeconomic development and good governance in Africa. Founded on a sound intellectual and research-oriented platform, the Centre’s central mission is to develop tailored solutions to specific African problems in light of best policy practices and current international scholarship. The Centre aims to achieve its mission through:

  • Research and dissemination of knowledge on relevant development-related topics affecting Africa
  • Organization of conferences, seminars, symposia and workshops and the development of popular consciousness on important topics
  • The provision of expert and advisory services to policymakers at the national, regional and international levels
  • Active participation in public debates on critical issues of development and good governance
  • Publication of articles, lecture series, survey findings, monographs, handbooks and books

ACCE has an established record of project support, research and implementation in a wide range of areas, including economic development; regional integration; capacity-building and project management; intellectual property; labor regulation; civil governance; and economic/trade regulation and policy. Since 1994, the Centre has successfully implemented a series of projects and administered grants funded by national, regional and international agencies, including the Ford Foundation, ODESRIA/Rockefeller Foundation, Inter-Church Foundation Fund for International Development of Canada, the USAID, MacArthur Foundation, OSI, and others. Similarly, members of ACCE’s Governing Council, Trustees and affiliated consultants have consulted and/or implemented projects for numerous international bodies, agencies and institutions, including the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the World Bank (WB), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Grants, Research, and Project Development

ACCE has an established record of project support, research and implementation in a wide range of areas including: market growth; regional integration; agricultural development; gender and development; infrastructure capacity-building and project management; labor regulation; human rights and democracy; civil governance and economic/trade regulation and policy.

Leadership
Ambassador James Kolo (OFR), FNIM, MA, JP, is the Chair of the Governing Council and provides leadership and vision for the centre, along with other members and the Board of Trustees. Amb. Kolo studied at University College, Cambridge University, under British Council Auspices where he received a Graduate Certificate in Economic Development. He is a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of International Affairs (New York) with a specialty focus in Development and Modernization; and a certificate in business and financial management from the Administrative Staff College, Henley – on – Thames, UK. Among many distinguished positions of public service and recognition, he has served as the Ambassador Extra Ordinary Plenipotentiary to several European countries

Our distinguished core group of trustees and researchers include academics, policymakers and educational administrators and young researchers all of whom have distinguished records of academic and public service.

The Centre has successfully implemented a series of projects and administered grants funded by national, regional and international agencies including Ford Foundation, Social Science Council of Nigeria National Research Programme, ODESRIA/Rockefeller Foundation, Inter-Church Foundation Fund for International Development of Canada, Capacity Building Project – Nigeria, the USAID, MacArthur Foundation, OSI, and others.
